When i traveled to Semarang, the capital city of Central Java Province in Indonesia, I took some time to visit Kampung Pelangi (Rainbow Village). The location of Kampung Pelangi is behind Kembang Kalisari Market on Jl.Dr.Sutomo Semarang. 

 

Approximately 200 houses painted with bright colours, was an idea of the Junior High School principal Slamet Widodo. The students sought funds to transform the poor village into something attractive for tourists and locals alike, to visit, as they do at other colorful villages in Malang and Yogyakarta. They received 300 million IDR to paint and brush all the houses with bright colours and transformed a slum area into an artistic and interesting place that would attract the eye. The locals enjoyed it too because they could now sell food and souvenirs from their homes.
